Kalaikoodam

Select Year

Kalaikoodam, is an initiative that was developed as an offshoot of the Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha (Now Chennai Kalai Theru Vizha). We intended to start as an arts school in a place where we create a cross-community environment and invite everybody to come and learn the arts.

The first Kalaikoodam was started in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Besant Nagar. People from the field of technology came forward to learn Parai with the fisherfolk and children from the local community enjoyed learning Carnatic vocal music and Bharatanatyam.

The idea is to keep arts open to anyone and make it accessible to everyone. Also it’s not just about learning the art form but to also create a space for conversations between students and teachers about art, society and more.

Our Instructors:

Vocal Music – Ezhilarasi, supported by Sangeetha and Monali.
Bharatanatyam – Sheejith Krishna, executed by his senior disciples Nirali and Natasha
Paraiattam – Deepan

Avvai Home, Besant Nagar

We observed that there is discrimination against girls learning percussion. And Avvai Home is a school where children had limited access to the arts. Hence the initiative to teach percussion to the girls of Avvai Home was taken. We have been training girls to play Ganjira, Ghatam and Parai. We are proud to say that the today the girls are district level champions in Paraiattam.
